Princess Imogen, daughter of the British King Cymbeline, has married the lowborn Posthumus. Outraged, Cymbeline banishes Posthumus from court in order to marry Imogen to his stepson, Cloten. Imogen escapes the court and runs away to Wales, disguised. Consumed with jealousy at the thought Imogen may be with another Posthumus tries to have her killed.
